I have seen a few people bring up the statement “The 99% here are still the 1% of the rest of the world. Everyone has a difficult life.”
How do you counter this point, if you do? Looking for advice for dealing with an old friend that is really irking me about this.
The protesters’ ability to have things like clean water, decent shoes, iphones and the hamburgers does not invalidate their freedom of speech. All of us who are a part of this movement recognize our collective good fortune. However, we also acknowledge that our wealth comes on the backs of others. It is not a question of “how good do we have it?” but rather, “at whose expense?” And debt, fuel-dependence, people DYING because of lack of health insurance- these are legitimate burdens. To dismiss this cause is to silence the cry for justice. And those who believe this is an illegitimate movement need only wait to be proven wrong. There is no sense in arguing with a tsunami. The wave is coming.
